1. Abdul El-Sayed just proved money can't buy everything
After Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Democratic Senate primary Tuesday, Trump's response was to post on Truth Social calling El-Sayed a "Communist loser who hates Jews."
It was one of many racist attacks he’s already faced since his big win. The first attack ad is already airing.
His Republican opponent Mike Rogers released a statement alluding to El-Sayed's Muslim faith by invoking his record "hunting terrorists.” JD Vance piled on at a press conference.
The Islamophobic pile-on started before the man had finished his victory speech.
“That’s the only play they got,” Abdul El-Sayed said at a press conference.
They're saying it's "great news" for the Republican Party. They said the same thing when Zohran Mamdani won his primary — right before he won the general too.
El-Sayed's answer to all of it: "You're not supposed to be able to beat $70 million dollars of outside spending... the power of our many is greater than the power of their money."
2. Michigan goes further left than El-Sayed: a trans woman, a Sunrise Movement founder, and a progressive wave
Tuesday's Michigan primaries weren't just about El-Sayed. Joanna Whaley — a former megachurch pastor who endured 15 years of conversion practices — won the Democratic primary for Michigan's second state house district, set to become the first transgender member of the Michigan legislature.
William Lawrence, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement and the organizer who mainstreamed the Green New Deal in 2018, won the Democratic primary in Michigan's 7th congressional district, defeating a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine and a former Navy SEAL. Lawrence ran on a datacenter moratorium and will face Republican incumbent Tom Barrett in November.
In the same night El-Sayed beat AIPAC's money machine, Michigan Democrats also nominated a trans woman who survived conversion therapy and a climate justice organizer who built the youth movement that put the Green New Deal on the map. That's not a fluke.
3. Todd Blanche promises a “permanent” victory on abortion
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told a White House Faith Office call — billed as off the record — that a "permanent" victory on abortion was coming, and that he'd use the Justice Department to extend abortion bans to every state.
The call was later posted to YouTube by Intercessors for America, a Christian nationalist prayer group, blowing the "off the record" designation to pieces.
His Senate confirmation hearings were still underway when he made these promises. The donor class doesn't need Roe — they can afford to travel. Everyone else is on their own.
4. Trump's $10 billion BBC lawsuit is blowing up in his face
Trump filed an emergency motion Wednesday to stop the BBC from accessing his financial records — the same lawsuit he filed against them.
Trump sued the BBC for $10 billion over a 2024 Panorama episode.
The episode spliced together two separate parts of Trump's January 6 speech — taken from nearly 55 minutes apart — to make it sound like one continuous statement. The edit made it appear he told the crowd: "We're going to walk down to the Capitol and I'll be there with you. [EDIT] And we fight. We fight like hell and if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."
He said “peacefully” somewhere in the middle.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett then gave the BBC broad discovery rights, including financial records for at least 400 business entities owned by Trump's family trust, with a Thursday deadline to hand them over.
Now Trump's lawyers are calling the BBC's motives "clearly political" and begging the court to let them rewrite the suit's language so his presidential business dealings stay buried.
The man who sued a news organization to prove he had nothing to hide is now scrambling to hide everything. If the emergency stay fails, expect him to drop the whole thing and pretend it never happened.
