1. CBS News hits Abdul El-Sayed with the most Islamophobic headline we’ve seen in years
CBS News really wants you to associate Abdul El-Sayed with 9/11.
He was 16 at the time.
“As the nation prepares to mark 25 years since Sept. 11, 2001, Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, may be facing the risk of renewed scrutiny and fresh political attack,” the headline reads.
The “scrutiny”? Two deleted 2020 tweets in which El-Sayed — a doctor and public health official — compared the COVID death toll to the nearly 3,000 killed on 9/11 and argued America should respond with the same urgency.
Even a CBS staffer admitted the piece was "horribly Islamophobic." Under Bari Weiss's editorial direction, this is what news looks like — and it should alarm everyone, not just Muslim candidates.
This all comes as JD Vance called El-Sayed “very, very evil” at a MAGA rally in Michigan.
It’s now new. It’s the same playbook Republicans and complicit media outlets have run on Muslim candidates for decades. Zohran Mamdani, who was nine years old on 9/11, gets the same treatment to this day. It’s racist and quite frankly insulting to Americans’ intelligence.
This is one of the seats that flips the Senate.
We just donated to El-Sayed — if you’re able, please join us in showing him you stand with him in the face of these racist attacks. Chip in to show your support.
Help flip the Senate — we absolutely need this seat.
2. AOC’s perfect response after Trump calls data center opponents “backwards and poor”
After Trump called those who oppose data centers in their neighborhoods “backwards and poor,” AOC had the perfect response.
"Let's put a data center at Mar-a-Lago, and we'll see how backwards and poor he is in response to that,” she said.
Here's what makes Trump's comment so dumb: a Fox News poll found found 70% of voters — including 60% of Republicans — actually oppose data centers being built near them.
This is one of the rare issues where Republicans and Democrats actually agree, and it's becoming a real liability for the GOP heading into the midterms.
Trump's response to all that? Insult the people who disagree with him — including nearly two-thirds of his own party.
AOC's response wasn't just a good line — it's an insight into how she's playing 2028.
We broke down what this exchange reveals about her strategy. Watch it here →
3. Texas just suspended 1.2 Million voters ahead of the midterms
Texas has suspended the voter registrations of 1.2 million people — 6% of the entire state's electorate — weeks before a Senate race where Republican AG Ken Paxton is already trailing.
The "suspended" designation means the county believes a voter may have moved. It doesn't technically bar you from voting, but it certaiinly makes the process more difficult. Voters have to fill out a statement of residence form, potentially on a provisional ballot, at the polls. It will suppress the vote in November.
Voters have until October 5 to update their registrations. Texas is also cooperating with Trump's federal voter roll handover.
Meanwhile, Democratic state Senator James Talarico holds a narrow polling edge over Paxton — in a state Trump carried by 50 points. The Senate majority could hinge on this seat.
4. Trump's pro-MAGA gas station chain may have gotten $4 million in fuel it never paid for
The mystery of how the Freedom Fuel Network has been selling gas cheaper than every competitor may have an answer.
A lawsuit filed August 19 in federal court in Pennsylvania reveals that oil supplier Mansfield Oil Company is suing a Freedom Fuel supplier, KRSM Inc., for acquiring over 1.1 million gallons of fuel — worth roughly $4 million — and simply not paying for it.
Trump had publicly hyped the chain's low prices, leading critics to ask whether the government had a role in subsidizing them. The answer, per the lawsuit, may be simpler: the gas was cheap because no one was paying for it.
