Tens of people showed up for Trump’s final pitch
Good morning and happy Election Day! This is Notice News. It’s Tuesday, November 3. The midterm cycle is almost over, and Trump spent his final pitch talking about his botched Reflecting Pool and striking Iran.
We’ll get into that, plus:
The Supreme Court tossed Trump’s California ballot grab without a single dissent
Abdul El-Sayed had his best fundraising day ever, thanks to Haley Stevens
Don Jr. warned Ohioans that Democrats want to make Ohio a state
Zohran Mamdani buried JD Vance with a nine-second subway clip
Trump’s disapproval hits a record 60%, and the rest is up to you
Plus: James Carville tells Jesse Watters why Republicans never have coalition problems
But before we dive in:
A few things you can do to stay sane today:
If Democrats do in fact take back control of Congress, the list of things they need to do is very, very, very long — but we have a few ideas.
Sign these petitions to send Democrats a message to hit the ground running:
None of this happens on its own. A new majority means subpoenas, hearings and votes, but only if the people elected feel the pressure from day one. That’s you.
Trump strikes Iran on Election eve
Trump made his closing pitch of the midterms Monday in front of the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and took a moment to declare the Iran war over.
“We had a war with Iran. We won,” he told reporters. “I don’t know if you even call it a war because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months.”
That same day, U.S. forces struck Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing U.S. officials. It was one of a series of limited strikes the U.S. has been carrying out in secret for weeks.
Some officials called the strikes defensive, aimed at stopping Iran from attacking commercial ships. One official said the campaign was kept quiet to avoid signaling that major combat was back on.
Iranian state media reported explosions around the island, which the Journal says is home to an underground missile site, a naval base and a desalination plant.
Asked Monday whether he’d strike Iran after the midterms, Trump said “no.” Administration officials told the Journal he’s still weighing his options.
The rest of the 23-minute speech was mostly about the pool itself, from the algae and the leaks to the broken pipes and how beautiful it looks now. Photos of the crowd did not call for a wide lens.
“Trump has lost the plot,” Hillary Clinton said. “For him to go to the reflecting pool, one of the great failures of his efforts to redo Washington and stand there as though it was a huge success and go on and on…”
The war is over, according to the president. Nobody seems to have told the Pentagon.
The Supreme Court tossed Trump’s bid to set aside 20,000 California ballots, without a single dissent
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the Trump administration’s emergency request to force California to set aside about 20,000 mail ballots it claims went to noncitizens.
The unsigned order gave no explanation. The justices didn’t even ask California to respond first, and none of them noted a dissent.
That’s three losses in a week. A Ninth Circuit panel ruled 2-1 against the administration hours earlier, two days after U.S. District Judge David Carter ruled against it too.
“Never before in American history has the federal government, on the eve of an election, sought to coerce a state and local government to abandon their own Constitutional election procedures and bend to the will of the Executive Branch,” Carter wrote.
The appeals panel had a suggestion. “If the United States believes different procedures are necessary for vote-by-mail ballots, we believe it should take that suggestion to Congress, not the courts,” the judges wrote.
A brief from UCLA’s Voting Rights Project found that 42% of the 20,000 names were “not anywhere to be found” on California’s current voter file.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta noted that after all the talk of widespread fraud, federal prosecutors made 28 arrests last month. “I mean, talk about a fizzle,” he said.
California has 23 million registered voters.
Don Jr. warned Ohio that Democrats want to make Ohio a state
Donald Trump Jr. opened for JD Vance at a rally in Swanton, Ohio, on Monday and walked the crowd through everything Democrats are supposedly plotting.
“They want to pack the Supreme Court. They want to make Ohio a state,” he said.
Ohio has been a state since 1803. The crowd, which lives there, met it with silence.
He moved on to D.C. statehood and “permanent one-party rule,” then went after Ohio’s Somali community over supposed “ballot harvesting.”
Vance was on the same theme Monday. “I saw a story that there are illegal communities of illegal immigrant Somalis who are coordinating to flood the polls and drown out your vote,” Vance said. “Send a message by voting for Vivek for governor.”
In another clip from the same day, the vice president had a new complaint. “I’m sick of politicians dividing us against each other,” he said, apparently without irony.
Vivek Ramaswamy faces Democrat Amy Acton for governor today. Ohio has been a state for 223 years, and it gets a say.
Haley Stevens switched sides. Abdul El-Sayed had his best fundraising day ever.
Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign says it raised $2.4 million on Sunday, the day Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers. It’s a single-day record for the campaign.
More than 65,000 donations came in, and 29,602 were from people giving to him for the first time. The average gift was about $37.
The campaign called it a “record-breaking grassroots fundraising haul.”
Hillary Clinton thinks Stevens did him a favor. “I have no idea what her thinking was. If it has any impact, I think it will end up helping Abdul,” she said.
Jo-Ann King, a 72-year-old retired teacher in Detroit, kept her review of Stevens short.
“She’s a snake,” King told the Washington Post.
Stevens wanted to hurt his campaign. She turned out to be his best fundraiser.

JD Vance took credit for New York. Mamdani brutally ratioed him with a video
On the eve of the midterms, JD Vance posted a list of everything Trump has supposedly done for New York, from safer communities to tax cuts to “historic investments.”
“We got your back, New York!” he wrote.
Twitter’s fact-checkers got to him first. A Community Note pointed out that his $472 billion investment number lumps together nationwide pledges, and that the 48% drop in murders on his list came from a state-run program.
Then the mayor weighed in.
Mamdani responded with a nine-second video of a prankster in a hi-vis vest who “helps” a subway train pull in, opens its doors, waves passengers aboard and then pushes it on its way. No caption. He didn’t need one.
At last count, Vance’s post had about 8,000 likes. Mamdani’s had 1.3 million.
Last summer, Vance used a Fourth of July speech to question whether Mamdani was grateful enough to be an American. “Who the hell does he think that he is?” the vice president asked.
Sixteen months later, he’s the guy in the vest.
Trump’s disapproval just hit a record 60%. Now it’s your turn.
The final NBC News poll before Election Day found Trump’s disapproval at a record high of 60%, with Democrats holding a sizable advantage in the fight for Congress.
In Texas, the NBC News Decision Desk found a staggering surge in Hispanic turnout during early voting.
Polls don’t vote, though. If you haven’t voted yet, today’s the day. Check your polling place and hours with your state or county election office before you head out.
If you’re in line when the polls close, stay in line.

NOTICE POLLING
Yesterday, we asked: Should House Democrats kick Haley Stevens out of their caucus?
100% OF YOU SAID YES, KICK HER OUT:
“As a Michigan resident, I am devastated by Stevens’ clear act of betrayal to voters. I hope it backfires, but I am frightened. To endorse a Trump clone instead of Abdul, who will stand for the people, should earn her the distinction as a traitor to democrats and remove her from the caucus.”
- moroz61166
“If her party loyalty is that weak, can she be trusted on anything?”
- callajr.jc
“She's a tiny person with a bruised ego. She literally tried to derail a candidate from her own party. That is a VAST betrayal. ... That's grounds for termination, in MY book.”
- michaelhogshooter
“Yes, kick her to the curb. She has now officially become a Trump puppet. ... While they are at, kick Fetterman to the curb with her.”
- obitlinda1712
“Time for the Democratic Party to clean up its own party, and they should start with her!”
- guile923
“Funny how her true colors so clearly illustrate her failures. So glad she did not win the primary.”
- weg
“They already have.”
- paul
All 74 of you said yes. Not one vote for no.
That’s all for today — thank you so much for reading. We’ll see you tomorrow!
