Joe Biden: Progressive friend or foe?

Drone armies, expanding overtime pay, over-the-counter birth control. These are just some of the things on Politico’s handy list of 30 Things Joe Biden Did as President You Might Have Missed. The list itself (and our internal discussion here at NOTICE) highlights the rift between Progressives over whether or not Biden has done enough to help the working class and marginalized communities in the U.S.

Anthony’s case for: Biden’s actions generally demonstrate a dedication to advancing a more progressive agenda than the alternative. Maybe he hasn’t forgiven student debt, or done much to end gun violence—but he’s certainly a step in the right direction, particularly when compared with what Trump is saying (quite literally, in the case of gun violence, “get over it”). He actually passed infrastructure legislation, which will pay dividends for years to come, particularly to marginalized communities. This is something Trump failed to do so hard it became a running joke in Washington

In short: voting isn’t marriage, it’s public transportation. You’re not waiting for “the one,” you’re getting on the bus. Take the one that gets you the closest to where you want to go. Not the one that would end democracy for a Diet Coke.

Andrew’s case against: The list is pitifully short and almost entirely limited to executive action. The list lacks bold, decisive, action—because Biden has never pushed for bold, decisive, policies. Single payer healthcare? Nothing. Protecting abortion? Nada. Eliminating the electoral college that is threatening to f*ck us again? Crickets. Dismantling the prison industrial complex that destroys the lives of millions of poor, disproportionately BIPOC men? Biden has taken a shameful, unequivocal stance against restorative justice—saying ad nauseam that our over-militarized police need yet more funding.

And—that’s all before we get to his overwhelming moral failure of not only failing to stop genocide—but having American tax payers foot the bill for it. As Ann Wright wrote in her masterful OpEd in Common Dreams, for God’s sake Joe, what the hell are you doing?

Elon’s latest insane demand on Tesla employees—and it could get worse

Noted oligarch and billionaire man-child Elon Musk had a stark warning for Tesla employees on last week’s earnings call: the production of the carmaker’s latest vehicle will require them to live and sleep on the production line. "We really need the engineers to be living on the line… We'll be sleeping on the line, practically. Not practically, we will be," Musk told investors, according to Business Insider.

As Insider notes, it wouldn’t be the first time Musk has treated his employees like sh*t. A former worker at Tesla's factory in Fremont, California, told The Verge that employees would sleep on the factory floor after 12-hour shifts. No wonder the United Auto Workers, fresh off their win against the big three automakers, launched a campaign directed at unionizing Tesla workers back in the fall.

Despite Lord Elon’s demand for absolute dedication to company’s bottom line, critics say that devotion is not a two-way street for workers. The Union points out that production has doubled since 2020—and Elon’s seen his net worth balloon to $230 billion—but workers aren’t getting their fair share.

Here’s the truly scary part: Musk has argued through his rocket ship company that the National Labor Relations Board, the executive-branch agency that acts as the working person’s watchdog against unfair practices, is unconstitutional. Last week, union-busting Trader Joe’s made the same argument in court. If the case makes it to the ultra-right Supreme Court, it may be sayonara NLRB.

A Grim milestone: 100,000.

That’s the number of Palestinians that have either been killed, wounded, or gone missing since Israel began its “war” almost four months ago, according to the United Nations. That’s 5% of the population. A full 80% of the population has been displaced, most of them “several times.” #DontLookAway

Meanwhile… A new New York Times investigation of social media videos that just dropped found Israeli soldiers filming themselves in Gaza, cheering destruction, mocking Gazans, and destroying “what appears to be civilian property.”
